Adolf Kauba is making waves on the track and will be the sole PNG representative at the National Junior College Indoor Championships this weekend in Lubbock, Texas.
Competing in the 600m and the 4x800m relay, Kauba has been in outstanding form, setting national indoor records in both the 600m and 800m this season. His outstanding performances showcase his dedication and drive, setting new standards for PNG athletics.
Meanwhile, PNG’s US-based athletes are also performing exceptionally well in preparation for the upcoming Pacific MIni Games in Palau. Leonie Beu set a new national indoor record in the 200m last weekend, clocking 24.38 seconds at the Conference USA Championships in Virginia, breaking Afure Adah’s 2017 record. Olympian Leonie Beu has started 2025 strong with a series of impressive times, including a personal best of 7.65 seconds in the 60m. Isila Apkup has also been consistent, recording best times of 7.61s (60m) and 24.71s (200m) this season.
Looking ahead, PNG’s athletes are gearing up for the outdoor season, starting mid-March. Timothy Tuna, who met the qualification standard for this weekend’s championships, was unfortunately unable to secure a spot due to the incredible depth of the New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) men’s team, currently ranked number one in the country. Nevertheless, training alongside some of the top-ranked athletes in the US is really benefitting for PNG’s contingent as they prepare for Palau 2025.
