Athletics PNG has announced a 38-member team for the 2025 Pacific Mini Games, comprising 19 male athletes, 13 female athletes, and six para-athletes.
Additionally, 10 athletes who have not yet met the selection criteria but show strong potential have been provisionally selected and given more time to qualify. As part of the PNG Olympic Committee and Pacific Games selection process, all sports were required to submit their selections to the Justification Committee last month. Selections were based on 2024 competition results and the latest assessments of training commitment. However, all selected athletes must maintain their commitment and meet performance standards in lead-up competitions during April and May.
Athletics PNG President Tony Green highlighted that the addition of a mixed 4x400m relay to the competition schedule will place greater demands on the sprint squad, and the number of athletes selected reflects this.
The selected athletes are: Leonie Beu, Isila Apkup, Adrine Monagi, Denlyne Kinbangi, Patricia Kuku, Hepzibah Romalus, Scholastica Herman, Mary Tenge, Edna Boafob, Ray Kumala Heru, Joyline Eric, Monica Kalua, Joy Tieba, Dorna Longbut, Regina Edward, Daniel Baul, Karo Iga, Benjamin Aliel, Timothy Tuna, Johnny Bai, Adolf Kauba, Aquila Turalom, Israel Takap, Abel Siune, Siune Kagl, Dilu Bob Goiye, Lakona Gerega, Pais Wisil, William Peka, Sialis Passinghan, Jiuteis Robinson, Robert Oa, Alphonse Igish, Emmanuel Anis, Morea Mararos, Junior Dennis, Jerome Bunge, and Steven Abraham.
Provisional selections include Lucas Osida, Damien Kote, Jackie Travertz, Netty Kave, Manega Tapari, Raylyne Kanam, and Harihi Naime for throws and multi-events, while Mary Kate Pais and Ongan Awa have been selected for middle- and long-distance events.
Brett Green will serve as Head Coach for the team, with Subul Babo as Head Coach for Sprints, Hurdles, and Relays. Dorcas Pilokos will oversee throws, and assistant coaches include Nelson Stone, Mike Smith, and Sapolai Yao. Sharon Atuai will be the Assistant Manager, while the Team Manager appointment is expected to be confirmed soon.
President Tony Green stated that team preparations are progressing well, with many PNG-based athletes training at the National Sports Institute in Goroka. However, securing sufficient funding for final preparations remains an ongoing priority.
